Today, a shooting incident at Cairo’s Mar Mina Coptic Orthodox church killed at least ten people, Egypt’s health ministry said. Officials stated at least two policemen were also killed in the incident, which injured at least five.

According to reports citing the Interior Ministry, multiple gunmen were involved. Militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility of the attack via Amaq News Agency. Interior Ministry said the attackers tried to enter the church. Some citizens were present in the church at that time. Coptic Christians observe Christmas on January 7, and security near churches has been increased.

There have been multiple attacks on Christian minority in Egypt by militant groups. At least 30 were killed in a gun attack in May in the Minya region. Dozens died in bomb explosions carried out by the ISIL near churches in Alexandria and Tanta.
